Description - A very beautiful antique locket Circa 1884 - 1900, an exceptional piece.

The locket is quite large measuring 69mm including the hanger x 40.5mm wide.

Crafted in 15ct yellow gold, the front & back are convex with the front having a raised cross, which is set in the centre with a 5.7mm to 5.1mm approx 0.65 carat Old Mine Cut J/K P2 Natural diamond.

Around the diamond is set with one blue garnet topped doublet measuring 6.5mm x 4.5mm and three blue garnet topped doublets measuring 4.5mm x 4.5mm and cut in an octagonal step cut.

The doublets are a vivid velvety blue colour, they looks superb against the background of the 15ct gold & compliment the old mine cut diamond so beautifully.

On opening the locket, you will find a piece of plaited hair, which has been placed on a piece of card which has the words " To My Dear HELEN on the 16th Anniversary of our marriage 15/Sept/1884" these words a beautifully handwritten around the piece of plaited hair.

A bit of a mystery as we do not know if the date written 15/Sept/1884 was in 84 they had been married for 16 years or if the locket was gifted to his wife in 1900 & 84 was the actual year they had Wed.

If only these pieces could speak.

Inside of the rear cover is a photo of a woman who we presume to be " Helen "

The original glass covers are in place with their chapter rings which are base metal.

The back cover is in plain smooth rich buttery 15ct gold.

The hanger is large being 19mm n length has a very generous opening which would be suitable for a variety of chains, to be worn with it.

The hanger has been engraved at the base, 15ct & W & GM

This is a wonderful piece of jewellery history, the raised cross set with the old mine cut .65ct diamond & Blue garnet topped doublets look absolutely stunning against the 15ct gold.

The locket is in fantastic condition, the glass covers are intact, there is a couple of tiny pin head dints in the back cover, these certainly do not take away for the overall look or quality of this antique locket.

This locket in my opinion  is a very beautiful antique treasure a piece to pass through the generations of a family.
